Free-to-use photography app Agora reveals the winning images from its latest online competition, #Sports2020 where 8792 photos have been submitted from all corners of the planet. Vietnamese photographer @tuan1368 won the $1,000 top prize with an impressive aerial photo of a dragon-shaped boat competing in a traditional boat race.
Agora's #Sports2020 contest gathered sports photos of all kinds, taken by photographers from 193 countries. Just like the Olympics, the best sports photos were competing. A gold medal was rewarded to the Hero. But unlike the Olympics, the winner got chosen by the votes of Humanity through global democracy.

Winner: 'Boat speeding up to finish in the new year race' by @tuan1368 (Vietnam)
Location: Quang Ngai, Vietnam
This is a boat racing festival held every 2 years in Son Tinh, Vietnam: a cultural tradition celebrated during springtime that the locals have been preserving for many years. The racing teams are usually divided into 4 boats: the dragon (pictured here), the unicorn, the turtle and the phoenix. It was quite a challenge to take this aerial photo with the sea’s high winds. I had to take a guess at the speed of the boat and choose the right angle to position my drone. I’d like to thank everyone who's voted for my photo, it’s an honor to become the #Sports2020 Hero.

'Triathlon explosion' by @bamperspectives (UK)
Location: St Helier, Jersey, UK
The subjects of the photo are the amazing triathletes taking part in the annual Jersey Triathlon. I was commissioned to capture the triathlon for the event organizers and the swim start was the portion of the race that I was most excited about! I really wanted to convey the explosive power and sheer determination of these amazing athletes giving their all at the start of a grueling three-part race. The weather was not great, and just 5 minutes before the start of the race it was still raining and therefore I did not think I would be able to operate the drone in order to capture the start. Luckily with 2 minutes to spare, the rain stopped and I was able to fly into position just in time to capture the amazing spectacle!
'Final Jump' by @angelusagustinus (Indonesia)
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
This snap shows Chinese athletes Chen Aisen and Yang Hao jumping during the Men’s Synchronized Diving 10m final at the 2018 Asian Games in Jakarta.
'Follow through' by @rileyhallaway (USA)
Location: Grand Forks, North Dakota, USA
Brandon Brekke, the athlete in the photo, only had to shoot one free throw for me to get the shot. In many ways, basketball is an art form. It's players exhibit incredible speed, coordination, explosiveness and perhaps, most importantly, muscle memory. The best athletes blend those skills together in exciting and truly artistic ways. There's something special about a free throw. It's one of the few moments in the sport where the game is slowed down, where you can watch an athlete blend all the facets of their game together into one controlled, fluid motion. Normally, we view the game of basketball on the ground, from the side. I wanted to offer a different viewpoint. In this photo, the athlete's shadow resembles the side profile we normally see, while providing an entirely new, top-down perspective of the symmetry, smoothness, and accuracy in the shot.
'Fútbol cómo si fuera un juego de ordenador' by @ajuriaguerra (Spain)
My idea was to fly the drone and catch a moment just as if we were looking at an old soccer video game. I took this shot during an amateur game between immigrant collectives in China.
'Terri Ayanna Wright' by @alesigis (Italy)
Location: Orsolina 28, Monferrato, Italy
I met Terri for the first time in NYC and we've been shooting together several times since then. Every time I fall in love with her natural ability to transmit joy with her body movements. In this photo, Terri jumps high, leaving her shadow behind, in a leap of faith and optimism. Jumping into the future, with the joy in her eyes and in every muscle of her body.
'Skydiving' by @roby_hartono (Indonesia)
Location: Surakarta, Central Java, Indonesia
I took this photo during the military parachuting world championship where 42 countries were participating. Having the opportunity to take pictures from a military helicopter was an awesome experience. It was my first time shooting at a 7000 feet altitude! Capturing the right moment was a challenge because the conditions were indeed very difficult: it was very cold, and I didn’t have any safety strap. I’ve had to overcome my fear and control myself, to be able to get good photos.
'Cyclist' by @pixsas (Germany)
Location: Nieuwesluis, Netherlands
The picture was taken in the evening at sunset, I happened to see the cyclist from a great distance and only had seconds to take the picture. Movement is good, you don't always have to drive a car everywhere, we keep fit on our bikes and protect the environment.
'Running por la ciudad' by @juliannieves (Spain)
Location: Madrid, Spain
I took this picture from the Eurostar Tower in Madrid. From my room, I could see people doing sports in the pedestrian area around the tower. Although there were many challenges to take the picture, such as the double glazing of the facade and windows, I managed to take some good ones! Madrid is a cosmopolitan city with an awful lot of traffic, but it also offers great pedestrian areas either for sports or any other hobby that we like to practice freely.
'Colorful Wrestling' by @somrajsahu (India)
Location: Howrah, West Bengal, India
Although other sports have become more popular today, wrestling remains one of the most traditional sports in India.
'Spirit of Sport' by @juliuspram (Indonesia)
Location: Mageland, Indonesia
'Sadurní Betriu' by @pinapli (Spain)
Location: Delta del Ebro, Spain
Can anyone imagine the feeling of skiing on sand? Spain’s cross-country ski champion Sadurní Betriu dares to exchange the snow for the sand and water of the Ebro Delta, a unique and special landscape located in southern Catalonia.
'The approach' by @pascalpbz (France)
Location: Saint-Saens Golf, Normandy, France
I wanted to change the stereotypes of golf photos we tend to see everywhere, and I needed a good golfer to be my model!
'Autumn rower' by @erwindoorn (Netherlands)
Location: Voorst, Netherlands
I was searching for the beautiful orange colored trees in autumn. I found a nice spot, but I was missing a subject. Suddenly this rowing boat came into the picture! I didn't know it was there, so this was a very pleasant surprise and it made the shot complete.
'Brown tufa' by @aska (Italy)
'Sport' by @birazhayalci (Turkey)
Location: Istanbul, Turkey
Dance is a sport that doesn't get the respect it really deserves. It challenges strength, stamina, but also flexibility and balance. It's really hard work.
'Kids play football in a small stadium' by @phamhuytrung (Vietnam)
Location: Phan Rang, Vietnam
When I saw this group of kids playing football at the local stadium, I decided to fly my drone to capture their shadows.
'Psicobloc' by @victordevalles (Spain)
Location: Menorca, Spain
I used to go to this spot for a climb and a swim every morning before work. This cave has two principal lines, one easy and the other one that I thought I would never be able to climb. I failed a lot of times hitting the water, hurting my hands and fingers while memorizing the steps and the grabs. I was improving little by little every day. After a few months of practice, I reached the top with a feeling of joy and satisfaction. On the photo, I was on the last step to reach the vertical wall above the cave leading to the roof. I taught myself a great lesson: if you work hard and try harder every day, you can reach goals that you had never even imagined before. The feeling I want to transmit would be "self-improvement", that satisfaction you get when you are on the last step into a easier way after a hard one on your back, just like your last day at school, work, university... To take this photo, I had to swim avoiding the camera being wet, then set the camera in time-lapse mode (one photo per second), then turn back to the place to start dry myself and get ready to start climbing.
'Surfing' by @nataliacd (Colombia)
Location: Oceanside, USA
'What goes up, must come down' by @withchris (UK)
I was helping my friend Inuk with his journey in becoming a professional skier. We created a jump out in the backcountry, and I lay down next to it pointing my camera upwards as Inuk backflipped off the jump. I want to express excitement from this photo. During this project Inuk was attempting his first double backflip, unfortunately not landing any that day. The shot was taken of his warm-up of just doing one backflip.
'Skating through Boranup Forest' by @blakehobson (Australia)
Location: Boranup Forest, Margaret River, Western Australia
My friend Zac White was cruising down the road on his skateboard through the forest. The feeling of being on the open road with the wind flying through your hair is a great one!
'Win' by @hong.nguyen2171984 (Vietnam)
Location: North Vietnam
This was a stick-pushing game taking place during the Ethnic Minority Sports Festival in northern Vietnam. The festival is held every two years in two regions, the North and the South, and is hosted by provinces on a rotary basis. Stick-pushing is a traditional game where the two players compete around an old bamboo stick, the first one getting pushed out of the circle loses! After the competition, both winners and losers are happy to celebrate all together.
'Jogging in the morning' by @hariwibowo (Indonesia)
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
This group of students were warming up around the stadium before their football practice.
'Bodyboarder' by @brandon.imbriale (USA)
Location: North Shore Oahu, Hawaii, USA
I was swimming out in the waves when a large one came through. Xylon McBride dropped in and pulled into the barrel, while I sat on the shoulder of the wave capturing the moment. I wanted to display the raw power of the wave, and the rush of Xylon riding it. I had only met Xylon that day in the water. Since then, we have kept in contact over social media.
'Sunset yoga' by @evablanco (Spain)
Location: Madrid, Spain
I wanted to convey the peace and tranquility of a healthy lifestyle. There were a lot of people in the park when we shot this photo, and it seemed that they were more interested in watching my friend's yoga poses than the sunset itself!
'Playing football' by @ariefriyadi (Indonesia)
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
I wanted to take a minimalist picture, so I waited for a futsal player to dribble in front of my camera frame.
'Ice caving' by @øystein (Norway)
Location: Svalbard, Norway
Just me and my buddy exploring ice caves. I wanted to show the cold darkness you find in these places. The silence in the old ice is fantastic.
'Karate kids' by @joao.galamba (Portugal)
If most of the schools in Timor-Leste do not meet the standards that we take for granted in Europe, a school in a remote village is even farther from what we consider as "minimum conditions" for a school. The building is cracked, the roof has holes, and it does rain inside the school. Though there is no lack of food in Timor-Leste, there is a lack of food variety diets. Thousands of people lack the necessary nutrients for a healthy life. It does reflect also on the easiness of learning and it cannot be expected that those kids learn as easy as if they had a proper breakfast and lunch and had classes in a classroom with good conditions and learning materials. On the other hand, the eagerness for learning and the dedication of these kids surpasses anything we can imagine. Their desire to learn and their dedication to school activities is bigger than anywhere else. Even if it was Saturday, these kids were at school facilities, practicing karate, and they were genuinely happy to make use of the opportunity the school was giving them.

'Para Athletics' by @hapelinium (Indonesia)

'Keep Spirit' by @cymot (Indonesia)

'Handstand by the waterfall' by @krisbianto.andy (Indonesia)
Location: Ngumpet falls, Bogor, West Java, Indonesia
Doing a handstand by the waterfall is not easy, even if you are a professional yoga teacher! I insisted on using slow speed on my camera to get a soft water effect but at the same time, I needed him to freeze to get a good result. I'm so happy that the hard work paid off!
'Best time to be with friends skateboarding' by @originalrafa (Brazil)
Location: Recife, Brazil
I love taking photos from unusual angles. I decided to capture this moment during a skateboarding adventure with my best friends. The round-shaped stone is nothing more than a concrete bench, don't you find it surprising to see how simple things can make such great effects?
'The fighter' by @rjbphotog (Barbados)
Location: Osaka, Japan
This image is part of a personal project to capture and accurately present movement. Instead of just isolating the model and capturing an arm or leg in the middle of a kick or jump, I found that using powder was a good way to show how the model moved and the power of their movement. In the photo, Yoshihiro, a martial arts enthusiast, is executing a kick, which requires quite a bit of strength. This is evidenced by the expression on his face and the positioning of his hands. In addition, the contrast between the black background and the brighter elements in the foreground helps to further convey a feeling of strength and power.
'Luge World Cup 2020' by @a.rosenthal (Germany)
Location: Schönau am Königssee, Germany
I was amazed at the speed at which the sled was moving down the smooth ice rink. It actually took some practice to get a decent photo, but over time I got the hang of it and was also able to take photos quite easily. It was interesting for me to see how concentrated the athletes were while driving. I wanted to freeze their emotions and the speed in the picture.
'New ballet' by @kirsimakov (Russia)
Location: Moscow, Russia
I wanted to shoot the ballet dancers in a different environment than the classical stage to show their true beauty.
'Bmx freestyle at the local skatepark' by @dmartphoto (Spain)
Location: Layton, Utah, USA
My friend Ryan is a professional BMX Rider. I was shooting with him at the local skatepark when I saw this big bowl, and I thought it would make a great new angle shooting it from the inside. I laid down on the floor and told him specifically where I wanted him to jump. He was scared of hitting me because the walls were too vertical for him to control the landing. He tried a couple of times without me and when he was ready, I laid back down, waiting for him to jump. I could feel the air coming from his tires very close to my ears when he passed by. Definitely an experience not suited for everyone!
'Paralympic national event' by @rrinaldy (Indonesia)
Location: Bandung, West Java, Indonesia
'Tennis' by @banudiker (Turkey)
Location: Cairo, Egypt
It's a family tradition to head to the tennis court with my husband and daughter every Friday morning. I love to watch them play and make memories. My daughter had the idea to play with the shadows for the photo, I believe she will be a successful photographer in the future!
'Goyo fighting the Crux of Sultanes del Swing' by @isabela_romero (Venezuela)
Location: Cuevas del Indio Recreational Park, Caracas, Venezuela
Pictured here is Goyo, one of the many regulars at this recreational park. He was climbing a beautiful, but difficult route called 'Sultanes del Swing'. I was just in the right place at the right moment.
'Moving through the city' by @hardingmicha (Austria)
Location: Vienna, Austria
The woman in the photo is a professional parkour and freerunning athlete, and that’s her typical way to move around! The jump was about 3 1/2 meters high and pretty far, she had to jump 4 times to get it from the right angle! We wanted to show how you can move through a city in a different way, to see everything within a different kind of perspective.
'Peaceful morning yoga' by @ducnaga (Vietnam)
Location: Son Tay, Hanoi, Vietnam
Yoga is a powerful tool to improve your physical and mental health. Coordinating your breathing techniques and postures will help you reduce your stress levels. This group of women never misses their weekly practice at their local stadium. One requisite to join the group is to wear a t-shirt with the national Vietnamese flag as a uniform.
'Taking the last wave' by @freeilli (Italy)
Location: Aljezur, Portugal
I am a surfer myself, and this time was my first to try to capture the same emotions I feel while surfing. When we finished our session, we decided to drive with our van to the top of the cliff in order to have a better view of the sunset. This part of the bay had the most incredible waves, but just one surfer enjoying them. He gifted us an incredible performance and I followed his movements with my camera trying to feel at his place. Surfing is completely different from any other sport, in the way you try to capture it (maybe just free climbing can compete). When you shoot a surfer you don’t want to just capture a performance or an effort, but to frame a relationship with nature. Understanding the ocean is the key to immortalizing the surfing philosophy.
'Never give up' by @dandirahman (Indonesia)
Location: Jakarta, Indonesia
Going to the Asian Para Games in Jakarta was one of the most impressive shows I've ever seen. I struggled to get a ticket, but I managed to secure one for the para-cycling trials. The determination and strength of the athletes who were competing really moved me.
'Kick it!' by @dikyedarling (Indonesia)
